Made in Shawnee Gifts
"Locally made” treats are a huge trend right now. There is just something cozy about opening a jar of local honey or finding a gift that is unique to the region. Candies, homemade soap, jellies – people just love locally made items. The benefits of shopping locally are twofold – not only are you supporting the local community but you can find some genuinely unique gifts. Shawnee has a variety of options if you are looking for locally made items. Here are just a few of our recommendations.
1) Homemade Soap by Monks at St. Gregory’s Abbey
Because when you think of monks you also think of homemade soap, right? We were pleasantly surprised to learn that the monks at St. Gregory’s Abbey spend their down time making homemade soap, honey, and jam. Their homemade goodies can be purchased at various locations around town, including the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art gift shop and Benedict Street Market. You can also purchase soap, honey and jam at the Abbey.
2) Pepper Jelly from Crow’s Main Fruit Market
As unappetizing as it might sound, pepper jelly is actually quite delicious. Mix it with cream cheese and spread on crackers, use as an ingredient in Gone In 60 Seconds Dip (see recipe below), or even eat it straight out of the jar – there really isn’t a wrong way to eat it.
GONE IN 60 SECONDS DIP RECIPE
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup chopped pecans
- 1 cup chopped green onions
- ½ cup cream cheese
- ½ cup red pepper jelly
Combine all ingredients except the pepper jelly and chill. Spoon the red pepper jelly over the mixture just before serving. Enjoy!
3) Dream Catcher from Citizen Potawatomi Gift Shop
Not only are dream catchers significant symbols in some Native American cultures, but they are beautiful. The Cultural Heritage Center might be closed for renovations but you can still stop by the gift shop located inside and check out their selection of dream catchers. Pick up a dream catcher ornament – they make great gifts.
4) Coffee from Manchester Street Coffee
While the coffee beans are technically not locally made, they are roasted right here in Shawnee. Casual fans and coffee addicts alike will appreciate that each batch comes from a single coffee farm so you know exactly what you are consuming . While Manchester Street Coffee currently does not have a store front (it’s a one man operation working out of a garage right now) you can still find coffee in various stores around town including Artzy Fartzy, The Arts @ 317, and Studio 112 ½.
5) Pecans from Benson Park Pecans
We don’t know who came up with the idea of coating pecans in chocolate but we would like to give that person a high five. Benson Park Pecans just make the treat even more fantastic. Milk chocolate, creamy white chocolate, even amaretto chocolate – makes your mouth water just thinking about the flavors, right? We won’t judge you – too much – if you buy these as a gift from you, to you.
