Outdoor Fun in and around Shawnee

231 sunny days on average in Oklahoma. That’s almost an entire month more than average! With those extra days, explore the great outdoors in and around Shawnee. There’s plenty to do! Here’s our top picks:

The Wes Watkins Reservoir in McLoud is a 1,142-surface acre reservoir and is home to the North Deer Creek Recreation Area. It's great place to boat, ski, fish, camp (Tent/RV,) swim, and hunt as deer and duck hunting leases are available.

Shawnee Twin Lakes are municipal lakes owned and operated by the City of Shawnee. Both lakes allow boating and fishing, and on one of the lakes you can fish, swim, ski or jet-ski.

Lake Thunderbird State Park is 25 miles west and offers a variety of water activities and recreation. Bike or hike the 20+ miles of trails. The Discovery Cover Nature Center allows you to learn about the Oklahoma nature.

City parks offer disc golf, a skate area, slides, swings, and plenty of space to run. Runners will enjoy the Airport Track! Into another sport? Find pickleball, volleyball, tennis courts, and disc golf courses.

If traditional golf is your sport, tee up Firelake Golf Course on the 6,335 yards of greens and fairways.

Chase the butterflies! A wonderful butterfly garden is at our Pottawatomie County OSU Extension Office grounds. In the summer months, many species of butterflies and moths, bumble bees, and honey bees flutter through the garden feeding.

Explore the other side of nature at the National Arboretum on the Oklahoma Baptist University Campus. There’s 134 different species of trees! Add in the shrubs and there’s nearly 300 varieties of plant life.

Ready to cool off? Head to the Shawnee Splash Water Park! Slides. Rock wall. Splash pads. Diving boards. And of course, a large area to swim!

If you really want to splash, a short drive to OKC offers whitewater rafting at River Sport OKC. That’s right! Whitewater rafting in Oklahoma. You can also flatwater kayak, stand up paddleboard, walk the sky trail, or soar through the air on a zip line across the river.

You may need an entire week to take in all the outdoor fun! Or visit during one of our festivals and make a long weekend out of your visit to Shawnee.
