National Arboretum II at Oklahoma Baptist University

On the campus of our local liberal arts university, OBU, sits Oklahoma's only Nationally Accredited Arboretum. All arboretum trees are mulched, tagged, and have dedicated irrigation. There are over 300 trees & shrubs on more than 220 acres, representing 134 different species, including a seedling from the OKC Bombing's Survivor Tree.

Airport Walking Trail

The Shawnee Airport Walking Trail & Japanese Peace Garden is home to nature and fitness attractions. The large, dual-use path surrounds most of the airport with a 10-foot-wide, divided path trail that allows for walking, running and cycling. One complete lap is 3.21 miles or roughly five kilometers. The northern side of the trail passes under Shawnee's 6000 ft runway. The entire trail is paved & well lit.

Making your way along the trail, you'll discover a reflection park and pavilion. Dedicated to Shawnee's sister city, Nikaho, in Japan, they are beautiful additions to the entrance of the track. A mulched workout station area offers basic workout equipment like a chin-up bar for a peaceful outdoor workout.

Benson Park Pecans

Located on the historic grounds of Benson Park in Shawnee, Benson Park Pecans offers a lovely experience in the small gift shop with a sampling of pecans and pecan products. Visitors can stock up on pecan oil, paper shell pecans, pecan halves, pecan pieces and holiday tins filled with tasty nuts and treats like chocolate amaretto, creamy white, and praline pecans. Orchard and plant tours are available with advance reservations.

Mary Williamson Dog Park

After riding in the car or a day indoors, let your four-legged friend stretch her legs at Shawnee’s Mary Maxine Williamson Dog Park. Divided into separate sections for big dogs and little dogs, the park lets pets socialize off the leash and offers ample room to run. There is also plenty of shade and even a pup-sized water fountain to keep your pet cool. Located across the street from the Heart of OK Expo Center.

Dean Weigant Park

Dean Weigant Park is one of the best known parks in Shawnee, OK. It is located on Leo and Rosa along the west corridor of the Airport Walking Trail.

On either side of a small creek with a bridge are two playgrounds, one specifically for smaller children to enjoy! In addition to having restrooms onsite, there is also a pavilion you may reserve for parties. The park is surrounded by trees and a beautiful creek, and across one of its two bridges, there is direct access to The Heart of Oklahoma Expo Center.

Oklahoma Baptist University

In 1906, the State Baptist Convention, in session in Shawnee, appointed a commission to make plans for the founding of a Baptist university. In 1907, a board of trustees was elected; and on February 9, 1910, the incorporation certificate for the Baptist University of Oklahoma was issued and a new university was born.

Oklahoma Baptist University opened in September 1911, holding classes in the basement of the First Baptist Church and in the Convention Hall of Shawnee.

The City of Shawnee contributed the original 60-acre campus and the first building, Shawnee Hall, which opened in September 1915.

Today under the leadership of president Dr. Heath A. Thomas, the university thrives, offering 10 bachelor’s degrees with more than 80 fields of study and five master’s degree programs. The Christian liberal arts university has an overall enrollment of 1,763, with students from 35 states and 34 other countries. OBU has been rated as one of the top 10 regional colleges in the West by U.S. News and World Report for 29 consecutive years and Oklahoma’s highest rated regional college in the U.S. News rankings for 25 consecutive years.

Redbud Park Picnic Area

Located off Beard and Dill, this park features three picnic tables, a bridge, and a beautiful landscape. This park is great for just enjoying the fresh air and playing catch, Frisbee, or just relaxing. It is located in a quiet neighborhood, and it has off the street parking. It almost feels like you're entirely secluded in woods thanks to all of the beautiful shade trees.
